A Quiet Corner: A Gwen John inspired painting course with Sarah Davies.

About the Course:

Gwen John's paintings of interiors are renowned for their portrayal of quiet, still, contemplative, spaces full of light. These domestic scenes are the focus of this one day course by Sarah Davies, who will lead you on an artistic journey to explore some of the atmosphere of John's famous works.

Let Sarah guide you through John's method of 'observation and execution' including:

• Preparing a surface
• Simplifying composition
• Observation of colour
• Using a palette grounded in colour theory
• Examining texture
• John's technique of applying colour

John's original works were in oil, but Sarah has experimented and trialled extensively to offer this course to students through the more manageable medium of acrylics.

What students will need:
Acrylic Paint: Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Naples Yellow, Vermilion, Ultramarine, Zinc White or Mixing White, Titanium White.
Short Flat Bright Hogs Hair/Bristle brush size 2 and 6.
HB Pencil.

Pre-prepared A4 mixed media paper will be provided, as will any images used on the day.

About the Tutor: Sarah Davies

Since completing my degree course at Bristol College of Art in 1990 where I studied Graphic Design, I’ve painted, exhibited and sold work in galleries and open exhibitions throughout Wales.

For the past 18 years I have taught Mixed Media and Print here at Vale Courses.

Teaching mixed media has allowed me to further explore my love of different mediums and to find some exciting new ones, while hopefully encouraging and inspiring others to explore there own creativity.

The main inspiration for my own work continues to be a fascination with the constantly changing colours and patterns of the British Isles.
