About the course

Did you know that the biggest stone tomb in Europe is in the Vale of Glamorgan?

The burial chambers of St Lythans and Tinkinswood are 1500 years older than Stonehenge or the Great Pyramids of Giza, but the history of the people who built it is unfamiliar to most of us. Their huge stone monuments are scattered all across Wales, built by hand and huge effort.

Find out why they were made and get to know the first people to settle down and live in South Wales, the Neolithic farmers, and how they got here, what they brought, and what they left behind. Get hands-on with flint artefacts and the earliest forms of pottery and find out how our Stonehenge-era ancestors built their monuments, celebrated the seasons, and how they lived, farmed and died.

About the tutor

Ruth grew up in the Vale, studied at Cardiff University and now works for the Open University, bringing the past alive for adult learners, community groups and history lovers. She is an avid collector, researcher and speaker, and is always keen to find out something new!
